Editorial Reviews:

The New York Times bestseller that is an inspiring “story of hope” (People) for parents of autistic children

One morning Jenny McCarthy was having a cup of coffee when she sensed something was wrong. She ran into her two-year-old son Evan’s room and found him having a seizure. Doctor after doctor misdiagnosed Evan until—after many harrowing, life-threatening episodes—one good doctor discovered that Evan is autistic.

With a foreword from Dr. David Feinberg, medical director of the Resnick Neuro-psychiatric Hospital at UCLA, and an introduction by Jerry J. Kartzinel, a top pediatric autism specialist, Louder Than Words follows Jenny as she discovered an intense combination of behavioral therapy, diet, and supplements that became the key to saving Evan from autism. Her story sheds much-needed light on autism through her own heartbreak, struggle, and ultimately hopeful example of how a parent can shape a child’s life and happiness.

Summary: Not good
Comment: As a therapist, and a woman wanting to have children, this book was very disappointing. Speaking as a therapist, we are not all out there to steer you in the wrong directions, rip you off, or give misinformation. This book makes it sound like the medical world is trying to prevent parents from getting answers or help and that is simply not true. Autism is tough, no doubt about that, it's tough for everyone involved, and we should be in this fight together instead againist each other which is what the book infers. Speaking as a woman trying to conceive, I did not appreciate the authors comments about being "very afraid" if you are wanting children. After I read that, I immediately stopped reading and almost threw the book away. As a woman trying to conceive, that was a really disturbing line to read. Shame on the author for trying to promoe fear instead of understanding. My advice, there are many other books out there that are much better.

Summary: An amazing story of recovery
Comment: This book is a quick read that is inspiring and amazing. Jenny gives a very real look at the reality of having a child with autism, and the difficulty that many of us parents of autistic children have getting the help for our kids that they need. Jenny shows just how much we can accomplish with perseverance and a belief that our children CAN GET BETTER. It's stories like hers that have inspired me to keep searching for the answers for my son's issues, and now he is nearly recovered! This book also has a helpful section in the back of resources for parents just getting started.

Summary: How did this make the Best Sellers List?
Comment: This book is poorly written and the foul
language was unnecessary. Don't get me
wrong, I like Jenny's sense of humor and
she's cute, but she can't write. She thinks
she knows more from Googling than most
medical professionals. She, also, has limited
knowledge and experience, but thinks she's
an expert. Take her opinions with a grain of
salt. However, she does point out some interesting
things about food allergies and yeast infections,
as well as, the warnings about inoculations
and suppressed immune systems. It would
have been nice if she would have concluded
the book with details on her child's present
accomplishments and how he was functioning
outside of the home and in a school setting.
Why she gave thanks to the Mormons is beyond
me because their prayers didn't help and were
after the fact, and she was vulgar with them!
I had previously thought Jenny was a bit more
intelligent until I read this book. That's been
a disappointment too!

Summary: Everyone should read this!
Comment: This is a great book! Extremely interesting, entertaining and informing! Whether you are a parent, planning on being a parent or have no kids in your future you should read this. Jenny McCarthy does a great job of telling her own story, as well as, explaining the autistic epidemic that now effects 1 in 94 boys in America. Lots of great information everyone should know.
