Summary: Weakest Since "One Small Step," But Still Some of the Best Stuff Around
Comment: Brian K. Vaughan continues to churn out awesome volume after awesome volume of "Y: The Last Man." This trade paperback consists of the four issue "Girl on Girl" story arc (that features Yorick, 355, and Dr. Mann aboard a ship that is in big time conflict with a submarine that is a bit too close for comfort) and the one-shot "Boy Loses Girl," which gives us an update on Beth's situation.

Every since the Safeword arc, "Y: The Last Man" has pretty much been solid gold through and through. So when I say that this TPB is the weakest volume in the series since the third book, that's really not a negative remark, because this was a really, really entertaining book. I wouldn't mark it as high as "Safeword" or "Ring of Truth", which contained some of the best comics I've ever read, but this is still way-above-average stuff.

I wasn't in love with the story of the four-issue "Girl on Girl" arc, but it was good enough to thoroughly entertain. But then, in the last issue of this TPB, Brian gives us a non-linear, dream-like, flashback-heavy story featuring Yorick's girlfriend Beth that gives us a lot of necessary insight into her character. I'm loving Vaughan's one-shots, because he really knows how to pack an emotionally powerful story into twenty-two pages better than anyone else.

8/10

Summary: A little slow
Comment: Volume 6 of Y The Last Man lagged a little bit more than its predecessors. This slow pacing was not as entertaining. Also, this volume kind of went on sub-plots which really didn't add to much to the main story. Not that it was bad or anything, it's just that I could have gone without reading this volume.

Summary: Still good, but something of a pause in the overall story
Comment: The fifth collection in the series, RING OF TRUTH, saw Yorick, 355, Dr. Mann, and Ampersand complete their transcontinental journey. GIRL ON GIRL sees them crossing the Pacific on the trail of Ampersand's abductor, who has taken him to Japan. It isn't that the stories here are bad; they simply aren't as good as what came before or what would come after.

And yes, there is girl on girl action. Although there had been some extremely repressed sexual tension between Yorick and Agent 355 in the first few books, nothing had happened. So one could hardly blame 355 when she finds herself in a moment alone with Dr. Mann that leads to some much needed affection. Yorick, who to tell the truth is a real weenie of a character (and the series weakest element), reacts badly upon discovering them together.

This isn't quite filler material, but it is close. It introduces some plot elements that lead into future issues, but I agree with those who think these issues are somewhat pedestrian.

Summary: Graphic SF Reader
Comment: Yorick is a bit confused and conflicted, when Agent 355 and Dr Mann have a fling.

Apart from this, the gang hitch a ride on a pirate ship, as eventually Yorick wants to find his girlfriend Beth, who is in Australia. He finds somewhat of a kindred spirit in the pirate captain, if you forget about the fact that she is a pirate.

Problems escalate when the Australian navy and spies become involved.

Summary: Good, but perhaps weakest book in series
Comment: This trade paperback collects issues #32-36 of the excellent DC Comics series. All but the last feature guest artists instead of co-creator Pia Guerra. Though the series is still enjoyable, I'd echo some other reviewers' statements about this seeming like filler material. Agent 355, Dr. Mann and stowaway Yorick hitch a ride across the Pacific on a commercial ship 'The Whale' in pursuit of Ampersand and his kidnapper. This volume's title suggests one of the budding romances among the travelers. Meanwhile, an Australian submarine suspects 'The Whale' of sinister motives and draws close. The final chapter provides backstory of Beth and her relationship with Yorick.
Volume 6 also offers the highest cost to issue ratio since Volume 2. Volume 5 contained eight issues for a list price of $15 US.
