Editorial Reviews:

Wes Craven's 1984 horror film is a better movie than it is generally credited for being. Forget the tawdry sequels; this highly original, almost surrealist work stars Robert Englund as a mutilated monster who kills teenagers during their dreams. Craven, who only directed one Elm Street sequel (Wes Craven's New Nightmare), takes the Hitchcockian step of layering in psychological explanations for the terror and then proving them all irrelevant in the face of mindless evil. The horror in the film is emotionally raw, in contrast to the overimaginative set pieces of most of the sequels that followed; and the final scene is as deeply unsettling as anything Luis Buñuel ever committed to film. --Tom Keogh

Summary: "Don't fall asleep"
Comment: I am almost ashamed to admit it, but I just watched this movie today for the first time in my life. I am also guilty of seeing "Freddy vs Jason" before this original Freddy film, and unfortunately that was my first taste of Kreuger. That was obviously nothing compared to this original, made 20 years earlier. It may look a lot cheaper (and it is with about the $2 million budget that was used) but the original Nightmare on Elm Street is mush more effective in creativity and scaring us, and even myself this day.

Though the budget is slim, I must admit the film made the most of it. Cheap effects actually work and are sometimes gritty and gruesome, and the film loves blood. Though there are only a few blood scenes, it is practically a blood bath. The acting, as we all know is always below par in horror films, actually is stronger here than most horror films I have seen, especially from this particular era. Nancy Thompson (Heather Langnekamp) is a strong character in the leading role. Johhny Depp (Nancy's boyfriend Glen Lantz) is introduced for the first time in Nightmare on Elm Street, making his first Hollywood start very capable as well. Lt. Thompson (John Saxon) is somewhat effective as both cop and father, though far from great and Nancy's mother Marge (Ronee Blakley) is the only charcater that really annoyed me, with her very emotionless acting at times and monotone dialouge. And then there is Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund), who is legend, whether you've seen the movie or not.

This is another slasher film, but gets creative. It's creativity is perhaps its strongest point. The screams and murders all take place in the dream world, which might sound silly at first, but actually makes for a much scarier scenario. Whatever damage Freddy does to his young victims is permament when they awake (if they do). And because it is in a dream world, rules can be broken, and in this case, Freddy can just pop out of nowhere - and he does. It is at these moments I literally jumped. It felt good too, it's been awhile since I watched a movie that made me jump on several occasions. The horror movies today don't seem to do it as well, and here is a fine example of a classic with great old school scare. The beauty of it is, it combines some gore and plenty of blood with those great scares, so you get a little bit of both.

Wes Craven has proven he is ever bit as genious as some of the other horror greats such as John Carpenter and Clive Barker. Craven too, has given us a horror classic that has managed to survive as a favorite for so long for it's creativity and a sickening villain in Freddy Kreuger who just won't stay out of our nightmares. Jaws kept us out of the water, Michael Myers out of closets, and Freddy will keep you awake.

Summary: made no sense
Comment: When I was younger I use to be scared to even watch these films but now that I have watched some of them(this one included) I feel they make no sense at all. Of course if you like the older horror films in the 80's this one will be for you. But I personally think they should have stopped with this movie(just my opinion) If by any chance you have never watched these before and don't know what they're like then rent them first to see if your gonna like them.

Summary: Good Movie, Good price
Comment: This is either the best or one of the best Wes Craven movies he has made. It changed the way we look at horror movies. 12.99 is a good price for the this edition even though you can get it at Target for 9.99.

Summary: The Original & Still The Best
Comment: I would have to say that this was the best NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET installment of them all, especially since this was the one that started them all and seemed quite phenomenal at the time when it was released back in the Fall of 1984, especially since it was the scariest, most bizarre horror flick I had ever seen at the time, which scared me more than any other horror movie ever did.

In fact, I distinctly recall how A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET scared me more than HALLOWEEN and FRIDAY THE 13TH ever did and that Freddy Kruger was even creepier than Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees were too, especially since Freddy had more powers and was even sneakier than Jason and Michael ever were along with the fact that Freddy was a lot sneakier and harder to spot than Michael Myers was in the original HALLOWEEN.

Therefore, I would have to say that A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET Part 1 was probably the spookiest and freakiest movie I had seen since HALLOWEEN I, since Michael's ghoulishness and sneakiness in the original HALLOWEEN is partly what made that movie so scary along with the fact that Michael was a lot less predictable in that HALLOWEEN, just like Freddy was a lot less predictable in the original A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET.

Therefore, you could say that director(Wes Craven) seemed to know how to succeed at scaring us with this movie the way John Carpenter was with HALLOWEEN I back in 1978, since both the original HALLOWEEN and A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET were both very successful spooky movies that scared the living daylights out of me and various other people.

It's just too bad that Wes Craven didn't end up directing A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET II, because I think if Wes Craven would've directed NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 2 instead of Jack Shoulder, it probably wouldn't have flopped the way it did back in 1986.

Additionally, Wes Craven and John Carpenter both seem to have a talent for making heart pounding suspenseful flicks as well like SCREAM, THE FOG, DEADLY FRIEND, THE THING, SHOCKER, CHRISTINE, etc.

In addition, it was also interesting seeing Johnny Depp in this movie before he got very famous and before his days on 21 JUMPSTREET.
