There's one scene in the middle of The Duchess and the Dirtwater Fox--with Goldie Hawn and George Segal carrying on a foreign language conversation that stumbles across French, German, and Italian (with a little Yiddish thrown in)--that qualifies as a memorably funny double-talk sequence. The rest of this broad Western quasi-spoof is pretty coarse. Segal is a cardshark who appropriates a bag full of cash; Goldie is a dancehall girl without the heart of gold. This is one of those comedies where you can understand perfectly well why the two romantic leads feel antagonism toward one another--both are pressing way too hard under the direction of veteran comedy guy Melvin Frank. The movie labors in the shadow of Blazing Saddles, which at least got the conventions of the Western right. Meanwhile, the soundtrack is invaded by Bobby Vinton singing "Lemon Drops, Lollipops and Sunbeams," at which point you may wish Mel Brooks's cowpokes would come riding across the backlot and onto the screen. --Robert Horton

Comment: This is my all time favorite Goldie movie and George Segal is charming too. But forget about them, the HORSE steals the show! This movie is a reason to laugh even if you haven't seen it in years.
Doesn't any one remember that in the 70's all the heroes were drunken losers?

Summary: Breezy Western Farce
Comment: "The Duchess and the Dirtwater Fox" is a frothy, bawdy timefiller that's just what the doctor ordered on a cold winter night. It won't make you forget classic Western comedies like "Destry Rides Again", "Cat Ballou", or "McLintock" but it'll suffice. What distinguishes the film is the indelible chemistry between stars George Segal and Goldie Hawn and a consistently clever and funny script. My only real debit here is a puzzling abrupt ending but other than that there is a lot of enjoyment to be mined here.

Don't look for a lot of hidden meaning or poignant storyline. It's jsut plain fun.

Comment: Thank you Ama. for having this movie in DVD. I saw this movie with my first BF at the Movie Theatre when it came out for the very first time, and what a real HOOT of a movie it was. Have to agree with all the viewers about scenes from this movie, but how in the He** could we forget about Blackjack, the horse. I think that I laughed more with those scenes than the other scenes or as much. The line "Only if he's yours Malone" is still one of my favorite Quotes in this movie. I've also seen this movie with mu DH and we have enjoyed it every time we've seen it. Please if you want to watch a REAL FUNNY MOVIE watch this movie...
