Editorial Reviews:

Clocking in at more than 80 minutes and featuring five episodes (all Curlies!), this collection is drawn from the golden era of Stooges mayhem. For a Stooge fan, it's all here: pie fights, forehead slaps, ear twists, nose punches, eye pokes, and konks on the skull from an astonishing variety of heavy and/or sharp objects. Physical comedy reached its zenith in the hands of the Howard brothers and their mangy sidekick Larry Fine, and this tape captures their wild, impeccably timed routines with a hands-off approach. Required viewing for all but the most lamebrained, numbskulled, and knuckleheaded. --S. Duda

Summary: Mediocre stooges' films
Comment: This tape was pretty weak. However, there was one short that could have made it much better... A PAIN IN THE PULLMAN!

Summary: Not really the best of Curly but a couple are in the running
Comment: Just so you know, Volume 2 of "The Three Stooges: Curly Classics" is a lot better than Volume 1, so do not make the mistake of thinking these Columbia shorts are the best of Curly. What you will find here are a trio of comedies with the Stooges in the Old West, or a reasonable facsimile thereof:

"Whoops, I'm an Indian" is a 1936 short that is actually one of the lesser efforts by the Stooges. The Stooges are caught cheating at roulette and are wanted "dead or in bad shape." There is some nonsense involving the boys hunting in the woods, and then Curly dresses up in drag and gets married to a great big hunter named Pierre But that is about it for this one.

"Rockin' Thru the Rockies" is a 1940 short with the Stooges trying to protect the ladies of "Nells Bells" in a wagon train threatened by Indians. There are a couple of decent bits involving ice fishing, Curly's encounter with a bear, and showing why wagon were known as prairie schooners. This one is the best of the bunch and there is more of an effor than usual to work the gags into the actual plot of the episode.

"Cactus Makes Perfect" is a 1942 short where the Stooges start off working on inventions, including Curly's collar button locator, and then get son a lost gold mine by a con man. For those who are offended by the violence of the Stooges this one might be exhibit #1 as the boys using pick axes and shovels to hit each other in the head. They actually have some success locating riches in the mine, which is when the desperadoes show up and we get an ending in keeping with the traditional fate of the Stooges.

If you got rid of the first offering and replaced it with something that was at least an average comedy from the Moe-Larry-Curly period you could justify the title. You would also think that they would have at least one true Curly classic in each volume of this series, but you would be wrong. The last two are good enough to justify four stars, but just barely.

Summary: Pretty weak tape.
Comment: A pretty weak tape. WHOOPS, I'M AN INDIAN is too boring for my likes. The short goes into too many different plots. The only highlight for me is the scene where the canoe appears to be jet propelled. ROCKIN' THRU THE ROCKIES was actually pretty good. The scene with the bear was funny, and so was the fishing scene. A funny short. CACTUS MAKES PERFECT was just too slowly paced for my likes. The scene where Moe is stuck goes on too long.

Notice that all three of these shorts take place in the forest, where the Stooges meet indians.

Summary: These shorts don't deserve the Curly Classics tape.
Comment: The title CURLY CLASSICS isn't the right name for this short. None of these shorts can really be considered classics. The first three shorts are taken directly from the WHOOPS, I'M AN INDIAN tape. And the next two are taken from the A PAIN IN THE PULLMAN tape. The tape would be better if they included six episodes. I like ROCKIN' THRU THE ROCKIES and TERMITES OF 1938, but those aren't really classics. Why couldn't they include some REAL classics on this tape like A PLUMBING WE WILL GO, DISORDER IN THE COURT, YOU NATZY SPY, HOI POLLOI, HOW HIGH IS UP? I could go on forever, but my review calls for a thousand words or less. They do better on the second Curly Classics tape with MICRO-PHONIES, MEN IN BLACK, THREE LITTLE PIGSKINS, PUNCH DRUNKS, & WOMAN HATERS. Don't even bother to see WHOOPS, I'M AN INDIAN and GENTS WITHOUT CENTS.

Summary: WHOOPS, I'M ROCKIN' THROUGH THE CACTUS
Comment: WHOOPS, I'M AN INDIAN! (1936) - A great short, with the Stooges as outlaws in a Western town, disguising as Indians to fool the sheriff. The first half is pretty good, especially Curly's fishing scenes, and the second half is ever better, when Curly dresses up as a squaw, and Pierre, a French trooper, falls in love with Curly. Bud Jamison is hilarious as Pierre, and I love the way he does the accent.

ROCKIN' THRU THE ROCKIES (1940) - The Stooges are leaders of "Nelle's Belles", a traveling entertaining female group, and get stranded in a cold, snowy old place. They are threatened by Indians to leave in 24 hours, or they'll get scapled. A pretty good short. Curly scaring the bear by barking is the best part.

CACTUS MAKES PERFECT (1942) - Curly's gold finder is proven successful by the Inventors Association, and the boys decide to go out west to search for gold with it. A hilarious short with a lot of great scenes. Best scenes include the scene with the mother (played by writer Monty Collins...yes, a guy!) trying to wake the Stooges up, the Stooges shaving, Moe and Larry's attempts to get Curly's head unstuck from a hole, and the hilarious ending.

Interestingly, a common theme is shared amongst these shorts, with the boys out in the woods and wilderness, and encountering Indians (a bit un-PC today, but who cares?).
