Summary: A Paragon
Comment: This is probably my favorite music of all time. It sounds like classic Vangelis, but to someone who knows his catalogue, I believe it even stands above the rest of his works. Vangelis has always been a storyteller with his albums, foregoing a straight track by track compilation from the film, but instead weaving the music together, even with tracks not used in the film to create a musical journey. This journey takes the listener from mystery, through idyllic beginnings, through doubt and fear, to a final historical context and fond memories. This is Vangelis' most atmospheric and visual work to date. It doesn't hurt that he was using the genius of a Ridley Scott film for his inspiration.

Another reason this album stands apart is the unique blend of synthesized and acoustic sound. This is not New Age, and it is not digital keyboard music. None of Vangelis' music ever is, but that unique sound reaches its zenith here. As I listen to this album I am often not aware what kind of instruments I'm hearing, whether real or synthetic. Vangelis really has created a full and rich sound that immediately draws you in.

Many listeners will recognize the title track. It picks up, after a mysterious opening, with a strong rhythmic and maritime melody sung by chorus. The choral work in this album is Vangelis' best and stands strong next to the rousing choral pieces which have become so popular in movie trailers and other media lately. The music overall reflects a modern viewpoint of the film's setting rather than a true recreation of period music.

I can't recommend this album without also recommending the film which it is based on. There is more music in the film that is unfortunately not on the album--my only complaint with the album. And all of it perfectly blends with the visuals.

This album should provide a good starting point for those interested in the music of Vangelis. There is truly something original and refreshing in all his work. I would also highly recommend Chariots of Fire, Blade Runner Trilogy: 25th Anniversary, and Antarctica.

Summary: Excellent piece of music.
Comment: The main theme has been in my mind for years since I first heard it. It was great to finally have an excellent CD that I now may listen to the entire sound track.

Summary: Vangelis has conquered musical paradise with "1492"
Comment: This album is truly a masterpiece that represents the pinacle of the music of the 20th century and should rank alongside the best of classical composers of the 18th and 19th century. It combines unique originality, delicate and expert craftmanshihp and masterful performance.
Vangelis truly understood the meaning Columbus epic journey and the ambiance of such time which is reflected so masterfully tracks like "Monastery of La Rabida", "Twenty Eight Parallel" and particularly "Pinta, Nina, Santa Maria" among others.
This album will take you back in time for a sublime and magical experience, the closest thing to being there with Columbus across the ocean and into the New World.

Summary: a bit disappointed
Comment: I ordered this item based on the gushing reviews of other consumers. While the title track really kicks, the rest of it is insipid and bland. I would have given less than 3 were it not for that track. To make matters worse, I found that piece of music in an anthology of inspirational music. My advice is save your money and look for the one great piece elsewhere.
