Is there anything that simply screams the 1970s' most indelible pop cultural clichés--the sunny romanticism, perfect vocal hooks, feathered hair, stacked heels, and flared sateen britches--more than the Swedish pop phenomenon Abba? And while many a pundit snootily dismissed them during their prime as some sort of prefabricated aberration, their worldwide popularity peaked somewhere just south of Beatlesmania. Indeed, Abba's music was as finely tooled and crafted as anything to come from a Volvo or IKEA factory--if occasionally more economically potent. This double-disc, 37-track anthology comes neatly on the heels of Mama Mia!, the smash, if unlikely, Broadway show based on the band's hits, and documents every single released by the band's Polar label in their home country as well as key tracks released internationally. This is the canon from whence the term "Europop" sprang. With a continental sense of vocal neoclassicism, informed by just the right ethnic clichés (and oft wed to the era's insistent 4/4 disco beat) to make songs like "Mama Mia," "Fernando," "Chiquitita," and "Voulez-Vous" work on a global scale, the writing team of Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson and their respective partners in music and life, Agnetha Faltskog and Frida Lyngstad, developed the seamless, wall-of-sound productions contained herein. The Definitive Collection features a rare single remix of "Ring, Ring" and a 1979 promo-only extended mix of "Voulez-Vous" as bonus tracks, as well as a concise, illustrated history of the band and each track. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Rating: Summary: You'll Love This CD Comment: If you like ABBA you'll love this CD. It has all their big hits and more!
Customer Rating: Summary: Great music Comment: After seeing Mama Mia it revived my interest in Abba music, which I had on LP's. I wanted the original music, not the movie soundtrack and this contains all the songs + many others with the wonderful voices of Abba. It's a great 2 CD set and a real bargain!
Customer Rating: Summary: great blast from the past Comment: I remember hearing most of these songs when i was little with my Mom's ABBA album collections- awesome
Customer Rating: Summary: Abba Remixed! Why Not??? Comment: The collection listed here: Definitive Collection is very true to it's name. It starts off with their early work, and takes us on a musical journey through the 70's and 80's. The bonus to owning this collection is the fact that all the tracks are REMASTERED.
If you are a die-hard fan or just getting into the group (Mama Mia) movie watcher, you won't be disappointed with this collection at all! The sound is great, and the music is timeless. What could be better?
Well, what really needs to happen (NOW!) is for Bjourn and Benny to take this opportunity of popularity from Mama Mia and expand one more time their creative genius. WE WANT AN ORIGINAL ABBA REMIX!!!
This doesn't mean that they have to get back together and sing (although that would be a miracle) we just want an ABBA remix of their greatest hits using the original artists. There are too many Abba tributes, and remixes by people who sound nothing like Abba, and the instramental or piano versions also make us sick...
ABBA needs to stop putting out countless "collections" and give us something we can really dance to again, and with a little bass added! The A-Teens did a really nice job, and it is actually worth listening to, but if would be even better if the "sound/beat" of A-Teens were mixed with the real Abba voices, it would be a work of art. However, it needs to be done by the professionals. It really needs to be done by Bjorn and Benny... and there is no time like NOW!
Many artists have done remixes, it doesn't mean that Abba has to "re-invent" themselves at all, their music "as is" will be around for generations. WE JUST WANT TO DANCE!!!
If your wanting to dance to the real Abba too, then keep buging the music companys like I do, and let them know I am not the only voice here who wants to see less compilations, and a c.d. we can dance to!!!
Customer Rating: Summary: Return to the 80's! Comment: After seeing "Mamma Mia" on stage and in the movies, I began reminiscing about ABBA's music and how much I loved it. This album is everything I could have hoped for. A few songs I don't remember but most of them are wonderful. I listen to the album almost everyday. For anyone who loved listening and singing along with ABBA in the past, this is the album to buy. It's GREAT!
