Punk/New Wave mad scientists Devo were among the few bands to understand the music video's potential as art form during its infancy in the eighties. Their brilliant and bizarre videos were compiled on VHS and then on laser disc; that long out-of-print disc, The Complete Truth About De-Evolution, has finally arrived on DVD, which should please longtime fans of this eclectic outfit. Rhino's DVD is essentially the same as the Pioneer disc, which featured 17 videos (including their radio hit, "Whip It") as well as the amusing and award-winning corporate film parody "The Truth About De-Evolution," and commentary by band members Gerald Casale and Mark Mothersbaugh. Live clips from the VHS releases are also included; the video for "Are You Experienced" unfortunately was nixed by the Jimi Hendrix estate, but its replacement--a rarely seen video for "Mongoloid" by experimental filmmaker Bruce Connor--makes up for its exclusion. Fans may wish that Rhino had remastered the live clips, but the fact that these fascinating videos are available at all (and at a low retail price) should convince fence-sitters of its must-have status. --Paul Gaita

Customer Rating: Summary: Interested in the origin of new wave? Comment: If you remember Devo, this review isn't for you. You either have this DVD or don't want it. For those of you interested in the birth of new wave, you might consider it. The videos are lame and cheaply done by today's standards, but the songs are musically pleasing and the lyrics are (generally) thought provoking.
Customer Rating: Summary: Devo - The bestest Comment: Fantastic.
When I worked at a video store, we watched this back-to-back every evening before we closed, and loved it.
"The day my baby gave me a surprise" has some of the most hilarious visuals imaginable, in quick, awkward juxtaposition. "Beautiful World" is a great mash-up of stock imagery, created long before this sort of visual work was commonplace. .. and the Devo Corporate Anthem is splendidly surreal.
Also, seeing some of their early, early work, and notable lesser-known songs, gave me a much more evolved sense of their abilities, and then a better realized idea of their socio-political intent, and also could see the parody aspect of their work, which never came across merely hearing "Whip it" on night-club speakers. These guys were really influential music-video pioneers.
The only annoying thing about this compilation is the interspersed commercials for LaserDisc that Devo did at one point. They are really fakey and awkward (sell-outy), and would have worked much better as an bonus feature you could elect to view, rather than be forced to endure.
Still, an entirely worthwile buy. For any aspiring video-artists as well - this DVD nicely illustrates the low-budget potential of imaginative thought.
A must for fans.
Customer Rating: Summary: A wonderful way to explain devo to others Comment: While other reviews may comment that this is merely a reissue of their laser disc collection (sans Are You Experience? no less), one of the great joys is the audio commentary by Gerald Casale and Mark Mothersbaugh. As they go through the videos the do a fair job outlining the history and artistic aims of the band.It is facinating to hear how an art project designed to make fun of the music industry morphed into them becoming part of what they mocked. This is a wonderful primer to help explain Devo to your less Devolved freinds.
Customer Rating: Summary: Devo in Video Comment: I was hoping for interviews and factoids-when in fact, it was all video. Most of which I had already seen. Kinda disappointed.
Customer Rating: Summary: Commentary is only worthwhile feature of this DVD Comment: I rented this DVD from Netflix and watched it. As a collection of videos, it's only so-so. Many other people have discussed the shortcomings, so I won't bother. The audio commentary by Mark and Gerald was worth the time spent watching the DVD, but even that was kind of bland, and little more than just, "OK, in this video we were conveying 'X" message." As a fan with not a whole lot of knowledge of the history and mythology of the band, it was interesting to me and worth watching, as I said. To a die-hard Devo fan, I could see how this would be an extremely disappointing disc.
