Softened butter is packed firmly into the bell-shaped lid. Cold water is poured into the base of the crock. The lid is placed upside down back into the base of the crock. Soft, spreadable butter may be enjoyed and served right from the crock. China

Customer Rating: Summary: butter keeper Comment: This is an attractive, well-made and useful item. Put the butter in the top, add cold water to the base, invert the top and your butter will stay at room temperature (spreadable and easy to handle) and will not go rancid because no air can get to it.
Customer Rating: Summary: Norpro Butter Keeper - Greatest thing next to sliced bread Comment: I bought this to replace another one I had had for years. It works great! It stays on the counter so it's always readily available and is always at a spreadable temperature. It'll hold one stick of butter and the butter stays fresh for about one week (probably longer, but we go through it quickly). Add cold water to just cover the bell when inserted into the crock and no air is allowed into the butter chamber preventing rancid butter. Replace the water once a day. Enjoy!
Customer Rating: Summary: The perfect solution for buttering your bread Comment: I live in the Washington DC area where it often gets muggy, yet this thing did its job even on the hot days. Soft fresh butter. And the price is perfect for giving to co-workers for those cheap office gifts, but this one they will love!
Customer Rating: Summary: Works Great In The Cooler Months Comment: Norpro Butter Keeper is such a handy little tabletop gadget that I bought two. My husband is a slob with the butter knife and gets toast crumbs and anything else he has used his knife on in the butter so now he can have his own butter to be messy with.
My only problem is that I live in So Cal where our summertime temps challenge the best air conditioning systems and getting the house cooled below 80 is near impossible some days, so I can't fault the product. As a result I can't use this during our hot weather months because the butter just falls out into the water when you lift the lid. I do however look forward to being able to use it later on in the year.
Another plus for the Norpro Butter Keeper is that its great for other firm spreads like cream cheese too.

I've found all the above claims to be true. I was very skeptical that it could hold butter upside down and do it well. I've had this butter keeper for well over a year, and we go through a lot of butter. Spreading butter on toast and other breads had always been an unpleasurable task since keeping butter outside of the refrigerator tended to get messy or wasteful once the butter got rancid, and spreading cold butter is just yukky. Now, it's always a pleasure. It holds a full stick of butter and that butter will keep until we use it up. I then pop the butter keeper in the dishwasher before changing to a new stick. I let the new stick soften somewhat before packing it into the butter keeper, fill the water container with cold water, and that's it. I keep a very small container of cold water in the refrigerator to replenish the water in the butter keeper about every 2-3 days. I have gone longer than 3 days without replenishing the water in the butter keeper and although the butter never got rancid, I could tell it was not as fresh as changing the water sooner. If the butter is not packed well into the container or the water is not cold, some pieces of butter may fall into the water; but the butter retrieved from the water is still fresh and spreadable. One of my sons, a picky engineer, was visiting recently and was so impressed with using it that he "exclaimed" he wanted one, which makes one less problem in choosing his birthday gifts next month.
