Spode blue and white earthenware is among the most collectable pottery in the world. In continuous production since 1816, Blue Italian is undoubtedly one of the all-time classic tableware patterns and was created shortly after Josiah Spode's perfection of blue under-glaze printing. The central scene is thought to be ruins in Italy and the elegant integration of the figures into the scene demonstrates the exceptional engraving techniques at Spode. Exquisitely framed by an 18th century Chinese border, the central scene of Italian ruins may have been inspired by a late-17th century pen and wash drawing. The unmatched artistry of the pattern still requires the most skilled hand engraving to create its remarkable sense of space and atmosphere.To this day, Blue Italian still originates from a hand engraved copper-plate using Josiah Spode's transfer printing method at his original factory site in Stoke-on-Trent, England. Summary: Poor workmanship on these bowls
Comment: As a long-time Spode Blue Italian fan, I was very excited when I found these bowls on sale. My excitement turned to dismay when I opened the box. Despite the fact that Amazon specifically advertised these bowls as "Made in England" they are clearly labeled as "Made in Malaysia" -- so they are slightly thicker porcelain than those you may previously own from England. They do not stack consistently with the better-made English Spode counterparts. But, the difference in porcelain quality was not the worst part. A quick glance at the design made it obvious why these are on sale. They are clearly DEFECTIVE. Spode is made with a handplaced design that is then engraved onto the porcelain. Apparently in the move to Malaysia, the artisans haven't quite perfected their craft, because these bowls all feature the lovely Spode design decidedly OFFCENTER on the bowl. It looks quite awful. My new set of bowls will be returned. I am very disappointed in this purchase.

Comment: I am very disappointed in this product. Amazon's website CLEARLY STATES made in England, and these bowls are made in Malaysia. FALSE ADVERTISING. Furthermore, most of the design on the bowls is evidently crooked. As I am buying these bowls for everyday use and not for a collection, the fact that they're made in Malaysia wouldn't be so bad if the design wasn't crooked. I am giving the bowls one star because the color is actually quite beautiful. BUYER BEWARE.

Summary: Easy to clean and functional
Comment: I absolutely love my Spode Blue Italian dinnerware! A classic, timeless pattern that survives trends. The detailing of the pastoral scene and color of the blue is just beautiful. The finish is very smooth making it so easy to clean-up. After several months of use the colors haven't faded, and it still looks good as new. This size is a great compromise if you are on a budget or space-limited and don't want to buy bowls of multiple sizes. I use it for cereal, pastas, soups, stews, left-over Chinese meals and much more! I have had one bowl chip on the edge, but my family treats our dishes roughly in the sink. The great thing about this pattern is that it is so easy to replace a single piece when necessary.

Comment: I love the Spode Blue Italian, but be warned, this is a big bowl for cereal. It cleans up well, and is durable, all the great things you expect and get from spode..but is really big for cereal.
