Summary: Maybe not perfect, but still quite nice
Comment: Hi, I'm StoryMaker. I just watched Jesse Owens, a video in a series by
Schlessinger Media called "The Black Americans of Achievement Video
Collection II" (what a mouthful!). I was a bit reluctant to watch it at
first - it didn't seem to be about anything that would interest me and,
from the little briefly viewing the cover told me, it didn't seem
kid-oriented. However, I was wrong! It has a nice format. Sure, I got
tired of them playing the song (which sounds like that "this little
light of mine...I'm gonna let it shine" song, a nice touch really) at
the beginning for such a long time, but I got past that. After all, it
was nice, I just didn't like how it was played for such a long time.
Then, a man appears and overviews a key element to Jesse Owens' story:
how Hitler thought that whites would be better at the Olympics than
blacks, but, as proved by Jesse Owens, was wrong. Then, they go on,
reviewing Jesse's life. Often, people will appear to talk more about
certain things or elements. It was all put together nicely and seemed
to be good and properly ethical in nature. It was entertaining and
interesting enough for me, too. I have to say, it's not the world's
very most kid-friendly thing, as they do show some scenes from a
concentration camp. However, they thankfully don't show much gorey or
hideous things and it's not like the whole thing is about concentration
camps. After all, what do you expect? Giggling duckies swimming around
the screen with Reader Rabbit singing the ABC's? The back of the box
says it's for Grades 5 & up, though my younger sister (who isn't in 5th
grade or older) did watch it, and it was perfectly fine for us.
Overall, a very nice presentation, good for learning about Jesse Owens,
and seems to have good will. We have enjoyed other Schlessinger Media
videos as well. Signed, StoryMaker. "Gotta trust the kid's review!"
