*UPDATE* from Nonesuch Records - The initial run of Laurie Anderson's Big Science reissue on compact disc contained a slight problem in the mastering that has now been resolved. On the 2nd track, "Big Science," the introduction to the song was missing the first of two wolf howls. If you purchased one of the CDs that contains the 'dropped' wolf howl, please return it (disc only!) to Nonesuch, 1290 Ave of the Americas, New York, NY 10104, attn: Big Science Reissue Exchange, with a return address, and we will send you the revised version. The re-mastering of Laurie Anderson's Big Science still resonates just as deeply as the original. Articulating a dream-like American society amidst social and political anxiety, Anderson's work is both comforting and sinister at the same time.

Customer Rating: Summary: A deeply cynical and disturbing genre classic Comment: I saw Laurie Anderson perform many of these pieces as part of her 1982/3 tour through Washington, DC. I'd never seen so many people rise so quickly to give her a standing ovation. My older friend, whom I invited, looked at me (seated) and said inquiringly over the din "I don't get it. What's this all about"? Big Science, and the related United States works, established her as the leading avant-garde minimalist lending repetitive quirky iconic visuals to deeply disturbing tone-poems of societal mis-communications and broken attachments. A number of groups such as the Talking Heads dealt with similar themes in more musically engaging ways, but Laurie Anderson cuts out all the melodic fluff and laid bare the emptiness engulfing modern America. I rate the contents five stars (perhaps without Walk the Dog, the B-side to the 45 rpm release of O Superman) owing to its enduring impact and single-minded attempt to reach through the speakers and combat your dissociated slumber.

Customer Rating: Summary: Almost Perfect Comment: I love this album and was actually into Laurie Anderson before the original LP was released. When it first came out on CD, the very low tones, especially at the end of 'O Superman' were gone. Now, the sound is as good as I remember from the LP. I chopped off one star because the music could be louder. Contemporary CDs don't need as much turn of the volume dial because the output is louder. Early remastered CDs are generally not as loud as newly--released CDs. An exception is when Yoko Ono remastered John Lennon's CDs. She turned up the volume. Also, glad as I am to have access to a digital version of 'Walk the Dog,' it would be nice to have the original single released. I can see why it wasn't added as a bonus track as even I can't figure out where it could go and not sound out-of-place on Big Science. But it could have been added as a second disc.
Customer Rating: Summary: A Record For All Times. Comment: After 20+ years of listening to it, I still come back to this album and find it as fresh now as it ever was. The music on this album is full of striking sounds and imagery and at its centre the cool, crisp, mostly spoken vocal delivery and I do love that voice. The thing I feel that is most often overlooked is the humour in the imagery, many of the tracks raise a smile or a chuckle and may confound your expectations.
The music can be wonderfully calming one moment but will have you bolt upright the next. Surprisingly for a mostly 'electronic' album it hasn't dated at all, perhaps because it's all done with a delicate touch and great melodies will always stand the test of time.
This CD release is a nice repackaging effort. The sound does seem a little sharper and the disc is accompanied by a booklet containing some insightful notes from Laurie Anderson, the lyrics(which were also included with the previous edition) and some photos not present on the previous edition.
The video to 'O Superman' and its B-side, the(audio only)track 'Walk the Dog', are included in the 'Enhanced' section of the disc, which means you can only play them on a computer(although it gives you the option of Wave/MP3 download). To be honest neither added anything to the original album but I suppose it's nice to have them here.
If you already own a copy of this album and, like me, love it, it is probably just about worth buying this new edition. If you don't own it: Why not?
Customer Rating: Summary: A Note From Nonesuch Records Comment: While we feel that the remastering of Laurie Anderson's Big Science dramatically improves the sound quality of the original CD, there was indeed a small omission: the first of two wolf howls that introduces track 2, "Big Science," is missing in the master used for the initial production run of the reissue. This error has since been fixed. Anyone who purchased the CD with the 'truncated' introduction to the title track may return it to us and we will send you the corrected version free of charge. Please see the product description above for more details.
