Summary: Excellent Print Quality but yes, it does drink ink
Comment: The Good: Print Quality!

I have been very surprised and impressed with the photo print quality of this printer. If you use the proper paper, you really CAN get lab-comparable results! I dabble in some photography and belong to some clubs here and there, some of which have ongoing competitions. Now don't get me wrong here, these are some VERY picky clubs indeed as far as scrutinizing EVERYTHING about photos entered in competitions - from the photo composition and such right down to the presentation as a whole so yes, print quality counts - a LOT. Normally I send off things to some specialty photo print houses online when there is something I want to enter - at worst maybe I'll use Ritz Camera (which is not a bad place, just not quite as high end as some out there). Well, one time I wanted to put something in and had been neglectful and not gotten a print order in to anyplace. With just a few hours to go, I decided to try out this printer's quality level - Well, bottom line is that I actually won a 1st prize for a category - With a photo printed on this printer! I was SO surprised at how good the quality is!

The Bad: Ink Usage

Okay, now the bad - As others have said, it does drink ink. HOWEVER, nowheres near as badly as just about any Lexmark printer I have ever known. And unlike Lexmark printer ink, the cartridge prices really aren't so bad. If you buy them in a store like Best Buy then they will run you about $15 each which is starting to get up there a bit. But if you do go ahead and buy from Epson then they are only like $11 and $12 each. I have not kept count of exactly how many prints I get per cartridge but again, its definitely more than any Lexmark I've ever known. I'd probably put it comparable to many HP printers I've known. And of course, few will ever beat Canon for ink usage so theres just no comparison there.

The Mediocre: Ease of Use

Epson software does not beat out Canon software for quality and usability. There are many features seemingly built in to all Canon printing software that are either glaringly absent or possibly just not yet found by me (which also would give demerits in the usability catagory even if that is the case - you need to be able to quickly and easily find what you are looking for) An example is that I've not yet found a software based function to print multiple photos on a page and arrange them in any way you want them.

This being said though, installation was a breeze - In a not quite top line installation situation - I'd installed on one computer using the factory supplied disks - Then I wanted to install on a laptop. I didn't feel like searching out where I'd put the disks so thought I'd attempt a plug and play and see what would happen - Windows found the software online immediately and Epson downloaded and installed all drivers and software via Windows plug and play within minutes! I've never seen such an install go so quickly or so smoothly! I thought it likely it would just be the basic drivers but no, it actually turned out to be everything on the factory supplied disk!

Summary:

I am generally willing to spend a bit more on printing materials than are many people, especially if I can get needed quality right at home so overall, even with the tendency of this printer to go through ink quickly, I've not been terribly disturbed by that. As with most anything you buy, its all a trade-off somewhere - even if one's tradeoff is just in an initial purchase price. Most things really do end up costing about the same when you add in every aspect of them, including your time and effort. So bearing that in mind, yes, I would highly recommend this printer to someone looking for a good, easy-ish to use printer with a really good quality photo print ability.

Summary: After a few months to a year, printer heads start to fail
Comment: I have never been as frustrated with a printer as I have with this Epson all in one. I also own a Kodak 5300 AiO and an HP Photosmart 7160. As previous reviewers have stated, this thing drinks ink like it's water and to make matters worse, after several months of "off and on" use, the Cyan print head started to die. No head cleaning, no alignment, no nothing will fix this problem. I have changed ink several times from several sources - (no, I don't like to spend money on ink) - and nothing has worked. As it is out of warranty, would cost too much to ship back to Epson for repair, I am stock with a piece of plastic and metal that won't work. I have bought Epson printers for years and NEVER have I had this problem before.

Comment: I had the Epson CX8400 printer for only about a week before it broke down. The telephone representative from Epson diagnosed the problem and said it was a hardware failure and the printer would have to be replaced. My guess is that I was just unlucky rather than this printer having some quality control problem. The performance of the Epson CX8400 was adequate while it was working, but the quality of the black and white print was inferior to that of the Hewlett Packard Photosmart C4480 that I had just gotten rid of (due to the outrageous cost of their ink). I would say that if you are very particular about the quality of the print, say for doing resumes, I would go with another printer. The Epson CX9400 which is low cost and includes a fax is a newer model, and it has much nicer printing than the CX8400, so that is what I would recommend. The real advantage of this line of Epson printers is that there are compatable generic ink cartridges available, which you can buy at LDProducts (and probably other vendors) at a price of 3 for $15. This is excellent considering the outrageous price and low yield of inkjet printer ink cartridges today. If you really want to solve the problem of high ink costs and slow printing, I would buy a laser printer. I bought a Brother HL-5250DN black and white laser printer for around $250 and got a few thousand pages from the original cartridge which is supposed to have less toner than the replacement you buy at the store. The TN-580 replacement cartridge has a stated yield of approximately 7,000 pages at a price of only $105. And laser printers are super fast, maybe 2 minutes for a 100 page document. The Brother HL-5250DN can print on both sides of a page, and if I remember correctly, the equivalent one-sided laser printer, which is probably good for most people, was less than $100. Anyway at my home office I now use the Brother HL-5250DN black and white laser printer as my workhorse, backed up by my Epson CX9400 for color printing, scanning, copying and faxing. If you have the initial money and space, I'd say this is the most effective way to go.

Summary: Doesn't work with Vista, dual processor pc
Comment: I've always had good experience with Espon printers but now I don't know. This printer, which I bought a year ago was working with my old windows XP pc. I got a new pc with Vista and dual processor. It didn't work so I went to the web site but the latest driver does not support vista. It worked well enough with the old pc but now I have to transfer anything to print on the old pc. Very disappointing.

Summary: Avoid this printer
Comment: Worse printer I've ever had. It's unfortunate too because the print quality is phenominal and it has a lot of great features. But it burns through (expensive) ink very quickly, will not support refils at all, and WILL NOT WORK IF ONE OR MORE OF THE COLORS IS EXPENDED. So even if you just want to print b/w and your cyan cart is dry, the printer is a brick. Terrible design. It's my wife's printer and she has to do a LOT of printing, so we go through a lot of ink. I spend more time and money (~$40 for new ink carts each time) trying to keep this thing up and running. I hate it. Will never buy another Epson.
