Get ready for high-powered messaging, email, chat, and a whole lot more with the ingeniously designed Kyocera Wild Card. An update to the popular SwitchBack, the phone looks like just another candybar style handset. Flip it open, though, and you've got a QWERTY keyboard and a large internal display. It's also one of the first handsets available from Virgin Mobile with Bluetooth wireless connectivity for communication headsets. Other features include a 1.3-megapixel camera, mobile web browsing, and mobile IM and email capabilities (via AOL and Yahoo!). It runs on the 1900 MHz CDMA network with Virgin Mobile's prepaid service, which requires no annual contract.
The Kyocera Wild Card opens up to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard for easy emails, IM chats, and text messaging. See an overview of the phone's interior. | | Virgin Mobile Service With Virgin Mobile, you pay only for the calling time you use. You can choose a plan that's based just on minutes (with rates between 10¢ and 20¢ per minute) or a monthly plan with no annual contract (with select plans offering unlimited calling on weekends and after 7pm on weekdays). You can also choose from a variety of mobile messaging plans, which includes text and picture messaging, email, and IM (via AOL and Yahoo!). Virgin Mobile USA's national coverage is powered by the nationwide Sprint PCS network. Virgin Mobile contributes 5 percent of profits from downloadable content to The RE*Generation, its pro-social initiative to help homeless teens, as well as provides postage-paid return envelopes in every new package for customers to recycle old phones. Phone Features The Wild Card's face features a large, 1.5-inch 65K-color screen with a 128 x 128-pixel resolution. You'll also find a dialpad here and a five-way center button that controls most of the phone's on-screen menus. Flip the phone open to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard, another five-way center button, and call control buttons. The design allows for calling functions to be performed with the phone open or closed. A horizontally oriented 1.8-inch screen (with a 160 x 128-pixel resolution and 65K colors) is placed above the keyboard between the phone's dual speakers. It can hold up to 500 personal contacts, with six numbers as well as fields for email, street addresses, URL, and notes. Because the Wild Card is Bluetooth enabled, wireless communication headsets can be configured with the phone. It also incorporates a jack for an earphone as well as a speakerphone for total hands-free operation. Support for basic text messaging and multimedia messaging (MMS) are built into the Wild Card. When used in combination with the phone's built-in camera, MMS opens up a whole new world of messaging fun. Instant messaging chat is also supported, thanks to an embedded AOL Instant Messenger client. A built-in wireless web browser lets you surf Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) 2.0 sites via the Virgin Mobile Web service. eZiText text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile email and text messaging users. A number of handy tools ship with the Wild Card, including an alarm, a calendar, and a calculator with a tip calculator. There's also a voice memo application for recording quick notes or numbers. The built-in 1.3-megapixel camera captures great stills and comes equipped with an LED flash, multi-shot adjustment, and a self-timer. Because the Wild Card supports Java applications it is compatible with many Java-based games. Many games are available from Virgin Mobile's wireless download service. You can also customize the phone with custom graphics and wallpapers, many of which are also available from Virgin Mobile. The phone fully supports Virgin Mobile's wireless content service, VirginXtras. Use the pay-per-use service to download ringtones, get content and vote in TV-based polls via the MTV area of your phone, or get jokes and updates from Comedy Central. Pick a celebrity voice to answer your voicemail, or get a Sponge Bob thought of the day. Vital Statistics The Kyocera Wild Card weighs 4.1 ounces and measures 3.94 x 1.97 x 0.79 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 195 minutes of talk time, and up to 150 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the CDMA 1900 frequency.

Customer Rating: Summary: Wild Card Comment: This phone was a decent purchase on my part. I am 14 years old and have owned this phone now for about 4 months. It is decent quality for the money though. The thing I hate about it is that while I'm in the middle of a texting comvorsation, my phone willjust go completely blank. It will stay like that anywhere from two to ten minutes. Then it will resart itself. The other thing I dont like is that twice now, it has said I was in a call and couldn'y send out texts and use many features. The first time the "call" lasted about twenty five minutes. The second time it stayed like that until my battery died, which was quite a few hours later.....There is one feature that I love, its the flashlight on the back, you wouldn't think that you would use it very often, but I actually use it all the time. lol And lastly, I don't like my service, I dont get very good service, and it doesn't have very clear voice during calls, its all staticy.
Customer Rating: Summary: Poor quality, fun phone Comment: I got this phone about 8 months ago and find it fun. I don't really use it for much other than texting so I can't tell you about internet accessability or how good it is with bluetooth. I noticed I couldn't really hear any of my ringtones so I kept buying them and buying them hoping some of them would work for me but nothing. Also, the thing would freak out on me (freezing, turning itself on and off, random screens having nothing to do with what it was doing, ringtones going off for no reason) After about 6 months of this ($45 of ringtones later) I contacted virgin. They told me all new phones are under warranty for 12 months after initial activation. I asked if they could give me some kind of credit for the ringtones on the broken phone and they first said only $3 and then only $6. They sent me a "new" one the next day and I noticed it was a refurbished one (nothing too bad, no gouges or anything) and while my ringtones were loud with it, the camera was absolutely horrible and it would freak out just like the other one but not as often. I could only make out basic shapes, not even recognizable photos. My husband upgraded his basic virgin phone to one of these thanks to a very good sale and his camera is crystal clear; i didn't realize mine was that bad until I looked at his. I called them yet again and this person was incredibly helpful. I received another "new" phone (apparently they only send an actual NEW phone if it's within it's first 30 days) and so far it's perfect. crystal clear photos, no freakouts and has loud speakers. This time when I called and asked about a credit for the stuff on my phone she said she doesn't have the authority to credit the $18 for my ringtones and games but her boss did and I would get everything back within 48 hours. she was wonderful!!!

Customer Rating: Summary: Buyer Beware (phone is locked, hard!) Comment: Buyer beware, although the phone itself appears to be quite capable, it is locked down in the following ways:
1- No web other than what Virgin Mobile allows you to have
2- No bluetooth other than headset
3- No data cable or similar access
4- Only J2ME apps approved by Virgin Mobile
You can't run random J2ME apps, only those for sale through virgin, you can't browse to arbitrary sites on the internet (403 Forbidden), you can't put ringtones on except those for sale through virgin, etc, etc, etc. Supposedly data cable access is disabled (I'm afraid to buy and try it out).
If you were looking for a phone that does what you want it to do, keep looking. If you are looking for a basic phone that works well and has a keyboard, it's a pretty decent piece of hardware however I'd strongly recommend looking for the "Lingo M1000" hardware as opposed to the "Virgin Mobile WildCard" hardware ... supposedly the Lingo doesn't have all the phone<->PC features disabled.

Customer Rating: Summary: get what you pay for Comment: I was paying upwards of 65 bucks a month for verizon and was terrified of breaking or losing my phone, because they're so expensive to replace(the last time I ran over it with my car, thank god I had the $5 per month insurance plan, but there was also a 50 dollar deductable. That adds up!)
To be honest, I hate phones of any type. I avoid them at all costs when it's not business hours, so for someone who has it attached to their ear 24 hours a day, this may not be for you.
I looked over phones and pricing plans, this is the phone I chose because I really wanted the full QWERTY keyboard. I got it in white from best buy on sale and they honored the price of $90 bucks I found on the virgin mobile site AND i got a free CD, all in all a super deal. Throwing in an extra 10 bucks got me a coverage plan with best buy if I break the phone(but doesnt cover water damage) or it malfuctions.
After using it for a month, this is what I've got to say.
Bad things:
1. Crappy battery. I don't talk on the phone more then 5 minutes a day if that, and it barely lasts a day or two without being charged. Thankfully, I'm around a plug.
2. Also, it seems to turn itself on and off a lot. You hear it in the middle of the night making little noises because of that.
3. not very good reception in houses
Good things:
1. very easy to use with keyboard
2. nice and loud with the volume up so you can hear it ring and vibrate
3. blue tooth enabled, works good with my GPS
4. has an alarm, scheduler, calculator, tip calculator, voice memo, stop watch and even a flash light! (in tools, you hit flash light and it puts your camera "flash" on)
All in all, I'd buy it again despite it's minor downfalls. It's a cheapy phone, so if I hurt it, its not 300 dollars to replace. I also love not being locked into a contract and paying about $30-$35 bucks a month vs. $65 for more then enough minutes for $25 a month(I think I have 200 daytime and 500 nights and weekends) and 1000 texts for $5 a month, with tax its about 32. Perfect!!!
Customer Rating: Summary: Love this Phone Comment: I have owned this phone for two months and I love it. I have been with Virgin mobile for over a year and have had no problems with them. This phone is easy to use and takes photos that are o.k. I love to Play games on it too, even though the screen is a little small.
