Summary: MASS EFFECT- AWSOME GAME!
Comment: Mass Effect installed and worked flawlessly in all aspects on both my Vista Ultimate Built for Extreme Gaming Desktop PC and very "basic" HP Pavilion Notebook PC with an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, 2G ram, a basic GeForce Go 7600, 5400rpm 250gb HDD. I purchased the game the first day of release, and have to say, I am definitely not disappointed! In my opinion, as a hardcore veteran PC Gamer, this is an awesome game. I give it an overall score of 9 out of 10 and highly recommend it. For everyone complaining on how you can't run the game, or play it, I recommend you take a basic or advanced computer class or course, or purchase an upgraded Vista Version of PC for Dummies. Otherwise, just buy a console Like PS3, Xbox 360, etc.) You'll avoid all your frustrations. You are supposed to give your opinion of the game, not your troubles with your PC.

Summary: Mass Effect lacked that little something
Comment: I have the Windows Vista Home Professional and Mass Effect demonstrated as being not compatible with this operating System. I attempted the installation of two different Mass Effect games. Additionally while I have not actually played this game due to this incompatibility, internet game reviews that I have read about this game indicate that at best it sucks. But don't let this review stop you from wasting your money.

Summary: Nice Game (with a Giant Asterisk)
Comment: When a game is all bad, things are easy. You uninstall it and forget it. Big deal. However, there's nothing more infuriating than a game that could have been great, that's ruined by a technical flaw, an infuriating feature or a bad design choice.
Mass Effect is such a game.
For me, the game is constantly crashing. I've not once exited the game. Every game session ends with a hard lock-up, where I need to manually power down my machine. Sometimes I play for an hour, sometimes for 3 minutes, but the game always locks up. I have a top of the line machine, purchased less than two months ago, which well exceeds the recommended requirements and is in perfect working order. The game runs very well, I get great framerate at max settings, however, the game will just randomly lock up.
And the thing that makes it even more infuriating is the cutscene / savegame design. You cannot save while in combat, and combat will often last a while. Cutscenes in the game are unskippable. And combat is often preceded by, and followed by, a cutscene. Which means that a, every time I die in a hard battle, I am forced to rewatch a cutscene; and if a game pleases to crash during battle, or worse yet, in a never ending post-battle cutscene, I have to restart from before the battle, re-fight it, and re-watch both cutscenes.
Finally, at its core, the game is rather uninspiring and offers nothing new. The vehicle driving missions are a bore, and the vehicle physics are laughable. The FPS portion is very repetitive, since the biotic powers take forever to refresh and large battles degenerate into a dumb sit-still-and-mash-the-LMB experience that's almost platformer-like. The AI is atrocious, both on the enemy and friendly squad side. Most of the fights can be won by peeking from behind a crate and firing at an oblivious enemy's elbow or heel. The cover system is abysmal. The only thing the game's got going for it is a great story and voice acting, and pleasing art direction. I am, frankly, dismayed at the universally great scores this game receives in the press. The game does draw you in, and man is it exciting to watch the story unfold, but the gameplay itself is very shallow and poorly done, and with all the technical issues on top of that... This game should have been a CGI movie.

Summary: the future of RPGs?
Comment: Mass Effect is the latest Bioware effort and a sci-fi themed action shooter/rpg. At the start Player has the ability to choose gender and face appearance of the main character and some backstory, which has no effect on further gameplay. The whole game is mission based and follows a linear story with minor cosmetic choices left to the player to determine (which again don't affect gameplay in any way). Final outcomes of the story like in a majority of RPGs can't be changed because they are tied to the fixed mission objectives. The main character can be evil or good. Again being good or evil does absolutely nothing to that fixed story.
... And no, this game is not as good as KOTOR. Far from it
Major Negatives:
Using inventory takes away large chunk of enjoynment from this game. It is crude and lacks functionality. Adding upgrades doesn't change stats on items in the display. You often have to click an overly long series of keys to check some mundane information about your items. You can't even check out what your teammates have on them unless they're in your away party at the time or you're in a lower deck of the ship and have to switch between `lockers'. Neither can you check their stats or skill trees.
This makes things very frustrating when buying stuff from a merchant.. Inventory doesn't have any overall view where you can see all items at once, and you can't easily view items by categories, either. Moving cursor over an item doesn't show its stats, you have to click it and they are displayed in a separate window (an `artefact' from ME being designed for console, I presume).
Every time when you want to sell/buy stuff from a merchant you have to click through the usual dialogue trees for that merchant.
The quests involving gathering tags, discs, surveying minerals, etc. are a big failure of gameplay. Not much else to say about them. The side-quest planets are nothing but a failure to design engaging environments.
The descriptions of various planets are probably a developer's joke. Not because they're unscientific or wrong, etc. but because they're not needed for anything and Player simply doesn't read them.
There is lots of dialogue in the game. Too bad the dialogue which you have chosen for your character to say is not what he/she is going to say. While playing an evil character I was finding him saying goodhearted or silly things even when dialogue option that I chose was totally different.
Lock-hacking minigame is tedious. The `blackjack' minigame is silly.
Minor Negatives:
Elevator rides are a bit too long; your team's AI a bit too stupid; missions are a bit too linear; no actual free-roaming in the cities or on missions; movement is artificially restricted; riding in the vehicle is boring.
You can do majority of missions in any order you want and you can visit the other two outposts (there are 3 altogether)... yes. However, the problem is there is nothing in them to come back for unless you count a couple of merchants with a limited supply of goods.
Positives:
Story is quite long and complex.
Character animations, face generation options, are amazing and as one previous reviewer said most of the time it's a pleasure to look at them talking or moving.
Combat is very kinetic and fun. Foes actually take cover effectively, most of the time.
Leveling is smooth.
P.S. from my perspective this whole DRM security issue is kinda overexaggerated.

Comment: This product is crippled with unreasonable DRM that makes it very likely you'll suddenly not be able to play this game any more. Simple things like reinstalling the game, reinstalling the OS, changing hard drives, upgrading your graphics card, etc. use up activations (which you are only allowed 3 of). Also, if you ever resell games once you're done with them, you can't do it with this game (even if you uninstall it from your computer) because the next person won't be able to play it.
The bottom line: Don't buy it. If you want to play this game, buy the console version instead.
