Customer Rating: Summary: Asus eee 901 20g Linux Comment: The laptop is just awesome! Small, light and really helpful while travelling! :) Despite its battery is a bit bigger than the eee 900 one, this one gives more working time. The charger is 12V dc, for the geeks who want to use it in the car, it will be reaaally simple to find a normal adapter.
The keyboard is slightly smaller than a normal one but in few weeks u'll find it very comfortable (typing with few fingers though).
The Xandros O.S. is the only defect... too easy but too limited... you can use it only for fun and few important applications. I have installed Win XP though and it is incredibly fast (the SDD helps a lot).
Feel free to ask me for any question/help (dimitrifederico@hotmail.com).
Customer Rating: Summary: great computer with poor operating system Comment: Received this little computer 3 weeks ago. It is well thought out and constructed. The screen is clear and very bright, and the battery life is more than 6 hours. Have already replaced the memory module with a 2GB SODIMM which has made the little guy run a lot faster. My only complaint is the operating system (OS). The OS is designed for children and as such allows very little customization or addition of programs. Am planning to install ubuntu when the new version written specifically for these little computers is released in October. I would have rated this computer with 5 stars if it had a better OS.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great Portable Compter! Comment: I just love this little computer. I typically use it for tabletop gaming, and it is the perfect size to display the information that I need, while not obscuring my vision around it. And, compared to my other laptop (15" screen) this computer is actually portable. I can really take it anywhere. I took it with me when I got pulled into jury duty, and while I was there I found it easy to use my Netbeans IDE to write java code. The screen resolution is good, but things can still get a little cramped. When I got to jury duty I bee-lined straight for a power plug, thinking that I would need to keep this laptop charged... Over 2 hours later I realized that there was no power coming from the plug, but my little eee still had 65% battery left. I was impressed! The battery life is amazing. (note: I was not using sound or the wireless connection)
I did end up unlocking the desktop mode of the OS, so that it would run a bit more like a traditional computer. I needed too many extra programs, and it was too much work getting them to display in the normal eee interface.
I would actually rate this product just under 5 stars, as there has been one drawback. The touchpad on my computer does not work well - it is responsive only half the time, and I find that the cursor jumps around quite a bit. This was easily solved by getting a tiny usb mouse, which works great. Perhaps there is just something wrong with my touchpad?
Anyway, I highly recommend getting an eee if you need portability - it is great!
Customer Rating: Summary: dissapointed Comment: I really wanted to like this PC, but when my Verizon phone modem would not work, I was dissapointed. To make matters worse, the tec support at Asus were a joke. I sure hope they get their act together.
Customer Rating: Summary: Lite, fast and ready for your backpack Comment: With linux and without windows - I got the black one.
Twice the RAM and twice the disk space - duhh. But if you want to slow things down with Windows - buy this one - install windoze - and have the faster box.
Voice recognition is a lot of fun. And this linux package with office, mail, wifi, firefox and free patches and upgrades - means you quit paying after you buy it. But if you choose windows you are just beginning your buying spree.
I like the programming tools of perl, python, ruby and java - access to the command line with a ctl-alt-t sets up the terminal.
I plan to slip this into my backpack (2 pounds) and surf my way between large cities in europe by train. The small keyboard takes time - I am 6'3" have large hands, and am up to about 30 wpm.
What I really like is the 6+ hours batter life. I put this on my headboard and when I want the net, I just reach back and boot - about 30 seconds. With wifi I am up and surfing in a lot less than a minute. When I have done what I wanted, it will shut down in about 20 seconds.
It is about as easy as reaching for a book to read.
You can't go wrong with this little linux jewel - if you want everything - and have the ability to travel easily too - 5 stars *****
