Editorial Reviews:

The Incredible Hulk (2008) kicks off an all-new, explosive and action-packed epic of one of the most popular Super Heroes of all time. In this new beginning, scientist Bruce Banner (Edward Norton) desperately hunts for a cure to the gamma radiation that poisoned his cells and unleashes the unbridled force of rage within him: The Hulk. Living in the shadows - cut off from a life he knew and the woman he loves, Betty Ross (Liv Tyler) - Banner struggles to avoid the obsessive pursuit of his nemesis, General Thunderbolt Ross (William Hurt), and the military machinery that seeks to capture him and brutally exploit his power.

Summary: Brilliant Just Brilliant GET IT!
Comment: This film has everything from great action, romance and acting. Edward Norton is great as Bruce Banner and you feel for his loneliness the same as you would have years ago with TV show version. Tim Roth is also very good as the Baddy who just cant get enough power and ultimately wants even more then the hulk himself. Loved the idea of abomination being even more brute then the hulk. Really hope they make a 2nd one before Avengers comes out. If you want a decent Blu-Ray then here it is get it! I have absolutely no complaints with this Blu-Ray and the fact its 2 Discs is even better.

Summary: The Incredible Hulk is only credible..
Comment: "The Incredible Hulk" is a romp in a Marvel Comics translation into film, but lacks the depth of Iron Man (Two-Disc Special Collectors' Edition) or The Dark Knight (Two-Disc Special Edition + Digital Copy). What could have been absolutely astonishing becomes only credible viewing enjoyment, a great popcorn movie, as other reviewers have described it.

Edward Norton is fine as the scientist Bruce Banner, but not outstanding. He does a credible job with the script as presented, but motive is lacking, a foundation for the story. The film--its writers, director--assumes viewer knowledge of the Marvel story, but a great film would fold the viewer into the story by providing missing background. We know what the Colonel wants but not why Banner was participating.

So the film ends up being superficial--all show and no depth. I want to know more about Tim Roth's character, what motivates him. The film certainly gives nod to the stereotype of the military seeking troop enhancement at all costs. Are they all like that? As for William Hurt as the Colonel, he went beyond his usual acting portrayals to give us at least a thoughtful "villain" rather than his usual bullish portraits. I thought this character was the highlight of the film.

And moon-struck Betty? How did these two get together? I have to assume that Betty and Banner worked together, but how? Showing her wearing a lab coat cannot take the place of some kind of explanation. What is their connection? I know that a film cannot be all-inclusive but some are. Iron Man (Single-Disc Edition) did just that! Now there's a five-star film!

"Incredible Hulk" is certainly a well-made film--the cinematography is awesome!--but it takes more than film editing and CGI to make an incredible movie. Although I enjoyed the movie, I finished wanting just a little more. However, the final scene is something to cheer about! May it happen!

Summary: better than 2003 version
Comment: Watch the 2003 version of The Hulk, and then watch the 2008 release. Obviously the new release is a HUGE improvement over the previous. Better script, better special effects, better cast led by Ed Norton, Tim Roth and Liv Tyler. Overall, this film is the better of the two... but that still is not saying much.

I have to go on a limb and say this movie was hyped to the point of near self destruction. It is possible the hype was created because this was known to be the year for comic book action adventure movies to explode into the box office. Sure enough, it was... Iron Man came through and made a huge impact on the big screen. Dark Knight shattered so many box office records they practically had to shove it into it's own category. Even Harry Potty 6 (a highly anticipated movie) needed to be puched back to winter of 2009 because of the competition created by the Marvel and DC Comic universe. Clearly, comic books have made a huge impact on screen writers, and frankly I see no end in sight.

When first saw The Hulk, I was so excited to finally see a version worthy of my time that I even rented the 2003 version just to have a chance to give it a symbolic farewell gesture. That excitement, excluding the performance of Ed Norton and Tim Roth, was met instead with a feeling of betrayal; a stone cold slap in the face which left the bitter scar of six years of waiting bruised into my face by an oversized green palm.

Better screenplay? Sure, but this doesn't change the fact that the film was completely predictable, and had absolutely no inspiration at all. From beginning to end, it was the same thing: nerd gets mad, nerd turns into Hulk.

Better special effects? Absolutely... but this comes with six years of evolving film technology. This entire movie was based abround how many times special effects could be used. The movie might as well have been a Jon Woo or Jerry Bruckheimer produced "action packed thriller" directed by Michael Bay. Better special effects do not make for a better movie. If any reader does not believe me, watch The Fountain, Pi, and Requiem for a Dream... all by the same director, Darren Aronofsky, who uses almost no CGI in any of his films.

Better actors? Here is my one critique that will not be negative. Edward Norton is now and has been my favorite actor since I first saw him in Primal Fear (starring along side Richard Gere). Tim Roth, another fantastic actor since stepping out of the shadows of earlier with with Quenton Tarantino in films such as Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, gave a great performance which almost overshadowed Norton. These two combined make the movie worth watching. However, their efforts alone do not make the movie worth the hype it received.

Only two stars? Why not?... I am dissapointed in this movie. I do not feel like I should give it a higher review simply because of the fact that it isn't worth more than what it delivered to me. It delivered a two star level of satisfaction, and I use the word satisfaction loosely.
